David Brooks, the Uncle Tom of the NYT, actually puts on a pair of big boy pants for once . . .
I have repaired 3 iphones by purchasing parts on eBay and following youtube directions.
Did the same with the timing belt on my Toyota truck.
A volume knob on my Yamaha surround sound receiver got fixed because there was a youtube video showing how to remove/clean/replace that switch.
Purchased a commercial leather sewing machine that did not work. Found a video on youtube showing me how to put that specific machine ‘back in time’...fixed in 30 minutes.
Millions of these types of videos.
Lol! That’s how I am. The minute I need to know how to fix something, I immediately look for a video tutorial.
Impressive list.
I really got into it with our kayaks. We had no local dealers, so we had to haul them 40-50 miles. They would keep it a week or so and cost us an arm an leg for the parts and installation.
So, I used You Tube videos. Bought stainless steel screws, bolts and other hardware at Ace and saved a bundle there.
The big savings $ wise and time wise was doing it in our carport with some home brewed Sun Tea. I could use my android or Amazon tablet in the carport to guide me. If part of the job needed two more hands, my wife could help. She has the ability to look at a video or diagram and is able to replicate what is needed after one look. That ability was passed on to our sons and grandkids. One of her brothers restored a classic via You Tube and ebay for parts.
I’m a sequential guy and need to break a task down to 1-2-3 steps, You Tube works well for me.
I have done minor things with her Lexus and my Ridgeline, again in our carport.
Our adult sons and grandkids are very mechanically adept. They can watch a good You Tube once or twice and replicate it on a boat, truck or car in their driveways.
“Lol! Thats how I am. The minute I need to know how to fix something, I immediately look for a video tutorial.”
Stupid/stubborn male pride and ignorance of You Tube kept me from using it for awhile. I was asking one of our adept relatives about a project. He told me to look it up on You Tube. I did and became a You Tube junkie!
Brooks just got lucky—like a broken clock with the correct time twice a day. :-)
This is the "You go gurl!" attitude that is rampant today. Its reinforced by popular culture, media, academia, and other areas of todays warped society. The reaction is the same; devoid of facts, logic, or reason.
