If you’re ever near Royston, Georgia, be sure and visit the Ty Cobb museum there in his hometown. Cobb was not only a great baseball player but also a savvy investor, making a fortune with Coca-Cola. He donated funds to build the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.
It occurs to me that Arnold Palmer, one of the greatest players in his sport, also became fabulously wealthy and also donated huge sums of money for hospitals; but look at the difference in reputations of both. :(
The other night I saw an old (1950) black & white movie, the Jackie Robinson Story. It was intended to be an educational biography, and indeed made the necessary points without gloss or embellishment. The word nigger was used where culturally appropriate* for the era, and many of the lines were direct quotes from identifiable people still active at the time. Branch Rickey had a cast iron set, for sure!
*Feel free to disagree with the word appropriate. Back then even non-racists used it regularly, not as hate but as a description or designation.
