Steele was paid to affect public opinion against Trump. The problem was the dossier was such obvious claptrap that even the Trump-hating news media saw it as garbage. Steele, a con man, delivered the dossier to major news media before the FBI ever saw it. Afterwards, Steele staged a huge drama by “hiding out” with his family in a secret location claiming the Russians had sent assassins after him.
