You’ve described America’s ever evolving Civil Religion. But the idea that the war was a holy crusade baptized in blood is as old as that gnostic Battle Hymn of the Republic that many (foolishly) believe is some sort of Christian anthem. It’s actually an anthem to a deified national government slaughtering infidels. Lincoln himself said many things that put the onus for the war on God, so there’s that too. And of course the lunatic prophet of slaughter John Brown got the ball rolling in the first place; he was considered to be better than Christ by many of the abolitionist crowd.

I remember reading an essay where the author pointed out that the Romans aren’t the only ones to have built Temples to their godlike Caesars- he said we had done it ourselves, we just fail to notice because we call our temple the Lincoln Memorial. Now I can’t see the statue of Lincoln without always thinking of that.

The politicians were fools. Sherman predicted that the war would be long and brutal. I’m sure the senior Confederate officers must have suspected that as well. Most knew how hard it was to just fight the Commanche and they had fought the Mexican war as well.

The North proved the advantage of industrial power over an agrarian society. Some European observer was reported as saying that with Union artillery and Southern infantry he could conquer the world.

I was born and raised in SE Arkansas but that didn’t make me believe the Southern cause was positive.

Moving monuments is not the same as erasing history not that much history is taught now anyways.

Had Lee won at Gettysburg it would not have meant the South would have won as long as Lincoln was reelected. Grant took Vicksburg the same day and that divided the South and the Union had already taken New Orleans.
