If I recall my history correctly it was really the New Jersey delegation who fought for this at the Constitutional Convention.
New Jersey is not exactly a “slave state”.
The side effect, however, is that Congressional representation is also the formula for the Electoral College, and this is where the law of unintended consequences plays out versus popular vote. Slaves would not have voted, but would have resulted in higher Electoral College representation for choosing the President.

It’s very simple. The federal government is that of a republic of united states, not a town hall style democracy. We don’t decide laws by taking a poll, we leave lawmaking to representatives we elect to those jobs. Among those legislators are Senators who are elected to represent the states, as entities with a direct say in the federal government. The president is elected to be the chief executive of our republic of united states, NOT the most popular by “popular” vote, but most popular by a majority of states; so a majority coalition of states, not two or three of the most populous states, decide the election of the president. Were it otherwise, you’d have a tyranny of just a few states over the many.
The super delegates vote how they’re told. Otherwise Bernie would have won. The dummy supers voted for Hillary.
.
The Electoral College was and is in place to do exactly what it did this year, to keep a few major metropolitan areas from dictating who the President is while the majority of the nation essentially doesn't even have a say in the matter. At the time of the founding, it was to keep New York, Philadelphia, and Boston, from dictating who the President was and now it keeps New York, Chicago, and LA from doing that.
Without it, democracy rapidly becomes the total disaster Plato described it as, leading to pointless wars for the benefit of the rich, unrealistically burdensome taxes on the population to support vote buying schemes, and the people at the mercy of tyrants who use tax money to sway the populations in large cities.
What do you expect from liberals other than fear and ignorance?
Liberals are the most unfriendly, greedy, fascist, hate-filled, mean-spirited, envious, resentful, vicious, close-minded, violent, murdering, child-abusing, amoral, stupid, censoring, horse-punching, book-burning, ignorant, uneducated, unskilled, childish, prejudiced, racist, women-hating, man-hating, perverted, thieving, destructive, American-hating, Christian-hating, muslim-loving, communist, vote-rigging, vulgar, dirty, smelly, election-rejecting, regressive, restrictive, prohibitive, bed-wetting, poo-flinging, cop-killing, and scared little lying thumb-sucking idiots God has ever created.
