The ‘-8’ was heavily re-engineered in almost every system. The computing technology is several orders of magnitude more advanced and complex. That means engineering, and engineers cost money. Avionics are a substantial portion of the cost of an aircraft.
And people play it because the aircraft is safer, more efficient and reliable. That means it does more and costs less to operate. So companies make their money back.
