One head of state offering cooperation to her most influential ally under only those conditions that she dictates is hardly what I would admire as adroit international diplomacy. Given Trump's absolutely justifiable conviction that the Germans have taken the U.S. for a ride with regard to defense (the country spends 1.2% of its GDP on defense) one is tempted to decline Merkel's terms and see just what in hell she proposes to do about it.

On a broader point, however, Merkel is symptomatic of the internationalist bent that is subjecting western Europe to demographic dilution and very unapologetically so. Her terms of uncontrolled immigration are quite simply unacceptable, and will have to be stated so in unmistakable terms. What Merkel fears most is that real U.S. leadership on this issue will imperil her entrenched and horribly destructive policies, and if support for those policies is a prerequisite of her cooperation then they and she need to be rejected with the contempt they deserve and have earned.
