One psychologically appealing explanation is white racism.

Slavery has been around since pre-history, and starts in Africa about the time apes began walking upright.
It continues today in the very same place.
White people who lived in Europe enslaved their own populaces through feudalism and monarchism, and chattel slavery was just an extension of that.
The Black Africans, the Arabs, the Asians, the Hottentots...everyone. They have all practiced some form of slavery for a million years.
It was White Christians who ended it violently out of principled opposition. The entire nation of China is to this day a massive slave state where Chinese thugs enslave other Chinese who are murdered if they resist. Where is their virtuosity? Where is their nobility?
