Beauty is skin deep. Ugly goes all the way to the bone.

Hillary Clinton campaign surrogate Ed Rendell said that Donald Trump will be hurt by the fact that there are more ugly women in America than attractive women.
The Presidency and the First Lady are not supposed to be an "average". They are supposed to be aspirational figures for the country. That can be represented in character, intelligence, strength or will, charisma, oratorical skill and appearance.
People who are average or below average in appearance often still want to be identified with attractive people, healthy people, intelligent people.
Ask ANY candidate, past, present or future, if it would help or hurt to be suddenly and uncontrollably "less attractive" for their class (taking age and status into account), and all would say that it hurts to be less attractive.
A modern president is more akin to an elected King or Queen, especially given the wall-to-wall years long coverage of the succession ... oops, election. Who would regular, average looking women vote for ... Princess Diana/Duchess Kate, or Priince Charles and the Rottweiler?
