I'm in Illinois (DuPage County) and I am hearing a lot of talk at local restaurants and everyone seems to be supporting Trump. A little soon to tell but hopefully Illinois is in play.

The Friends of the Vietnam Veterans Plaza announced that Donald J. Trump, of The Trump Organization, was honored for his unwavering support of United States veterans at the Fourth Annual Honoree of the Year Awards Luncheon held at The Metropolitan Club during the City’s Fleet Week.

Greg Kelly of Fox News acted as the event MC, 60 active members of the US Armed Forces were present and community and civic guests included Robert M. Morganthau, District Attorney for New York County, and Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, Ray Kelly.

A lifetime New Yorker, Kelly is a Vietnam combat veteran, having served with the 2nd Battalion First Marines. As a young 1st Lieutenant, he led troops in battle for most of his 13 months in Vietnam. After returning to the United States, Kelly spent 30 years in the Marine Corps Reserve, retiring as a Colonel.

Trump, the 2008 Honoree of the Year, is a former co-chairman of the New York Vietnam Veterans Memodal Commission, established by Mayor Edward I. Koch. Their mission was to raise the necessary funds to build a memorial in honor of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War, and to create a counseling and employment program for Veterans.

The New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated on the tenth anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in 1985. The commission raised in excess of $3 million, but it was Donald Trump’s challenge to the City of New York—and his personal contribution of $1 million—that was instrumental in the completion of the project.

The monument—a translucent glass-block structure etched with excerpts of letters sent to and from servicemen during the Vietnam War—was built in the Vietnam Veterans Plaza at 55 Water Street. The dedication of the Memorial followed a Welcome Home parade where more than 25,000 Veterans marched across the Brooklyn Bridge down to Broadway’s Canyon of Heroes. It was the largest ticker-tape parade in New York City’s history.

The Friends of the Vietnam Veterans Plaza was established in 1999 to redesign, fund and rebuild the 90,000 s/f plaza. In November of 2001, the Friends completed the renovation phase by raising $7.1 million from both public and private sectors.

This year’s honoree luncheon was the fourth dedication of the Phelps Award, designed by artist John Phelps who was a Navy Veteran in the Vietnam War. The award is named after Phelps and his son, Chance R. Phelps, who was killed in Falluja, Iraq in 2003.
