Where would Cruz get his votes? National general elections cannot be won without independent support

I thought Trump was the presumptive nominee.

And Romney did very well amongst independents in 2012 over BHO but lost the election

Romney won independents by 5 points - that wasn’t near enough to cancel out the the larger base that the Democrats have.

The fact of the matter is that Democrats can win without independents but Republicans can’t. Cruz would actually lose the independent vote by a large margin - imagine what that would yield in the general election.

Their base is growing
Ours is contracting

I believe a Reagan could get elected today but not with the number of states he carried in 1980 and esp 1984

You have a great point and I totally agree.

I do see this is a positive development though as I feel that is no core "republican base" and the parties need a realignment.

Social conservatives are often touted as "the base", but their ideals and priorities tend to be very different than that of fiscal conservatives, libertarians, etc. that also make up significant portions of the party.

I'd rather have a realignment of the parties so that those with common priorities are better grouped.
