“Harriers weren’t in use then either.”
___________________________________________
Reminds me of “American Genius” on Netflix.
It was enjoyable at first, but I got tired of watching WWII reenactments with M-16s and revolutionary war shootouts with Winchester model 94 lever-action “muskets”.
Ugh.
Wow - an internet NavHero....with film even (sadly lost in a boating accident).
US Harriers and Cobras were not even in production yet in 1970, yet you remember them 'as though it were yesterday'. I suppose you sailed with Halsey too.
AH-1 Cobras were in use by the Army during the Tet offensive in 1968 and through to the end of the Vietnam War. Cobras provided fire support for ground forces, escorted transport helicopters and other roles, including aerial rocket artillery (ARA) battalions in the two Airmobile divisions. They also formed “hunter killer” teams by pairing with OH-6A scout helicopters.
according to wiki.
MY BAD!!!!!!
I meant Apache instead of Cobra. Good thing I don't get to do dangerous stuff often, cuz a brain fart like that could kill ya.
Re a STOVL version of the F35. Is the F35 working well enough to be deployed worldwide or is it still in the experimental stage?
Very expensive for so few. The Red Chinese Air Force will outnumber us more than enough to insure air victory and dominance. They have more planes and pilots than we do and don’t care if they lost half of them.
We saw this in No. Korea. They want to win at any cost and will pay that price. When you have 1.5+ BILLION people as a manpower pool, losing a couple hundred thousand is peanuts.
Cobras were used at An Loc in 1972. Were used as tank destroyers. I saw a squad of them outside of Ca Mau at the tip of the Mekong Delta when I visited there in November, 1970. Flew right over them.
Had the old Flying Tiger shark-face designs. Great to see them.
Too bad the U.S, Navy didn’t buy the Sea Dart.
A jet fighter that took off and landed on the water.
Thanks for your service.
The Fresno was agreed to be sold to the Peruvian navy, but was never delivered for some reason.
Have any insight into that?
I had heard that she was going to be sold, but I didn’t hear that she had not been delivered. I’ll have to look into that, and see what happened.
you are correct. Thank you for refreshing my memory.
