Trump’s trying to build a new white working class coalition to kill both party establishments. “Close the border and save Social Security” is a message that will suck millions of white votes away from Hillary in November.
When are we gong to start to hear about welfare cuts and welfare running out of money?
As far as âfixing anti-American trade deals,â what has to be done to fix them? How do I tell the difference between a âgoodâ one and a bad one? What do I look for in the deal to know itâs âfixed?â
One acronym...TPP...and Ted was for it before he as against it.
As far as the laundry list Ted is “for”...he is part of the DC cartel he so excoriates...I don’t trust him or their ilk. They’re for it when it is politically convenient or expedient. I’m willing to take a chance on someone that is certainly not perfect, but wants to put America first.
“Here Trump is again continuing the myth that Social Security or Medicare are sustainable.”
We all know it is not sustainable at the same rates. The law needs to be changed as GWB tried to do. I think Trump can get it done. I have paid into SS all my life and it is good part of my retirement income.
And if nominated, and subsequently elected, admittedly high hurdles, he will have a mandate for Congress to do so. And I expect Trump will use the bully pulpit to encourage Congress to do it and will campaign against them if they don’t.
Not a bad strategy for those who feel their country and retirement are slipping away.
So between the Democrats and even 1-2 liberal Republicans (if needed), I don't think it will pass.
He might be able to get something more modest through.
Well, Trump is partially right about Ryan ending the campaign, but it wasn’t when he was selected. Rather, it was when Ryan apologized for Romney’s 47% comment during the VP debate thereby raising the GOPe white flag and surrendering.
This is going to be very painful for us to admit, but Trump is right. It is still the Third Rail, and still deadly.
If we don’t keep the Senate, it’s not because Trump gets the nom or is elected...it’s the Senate.
And Cruz will?
It’s all just speculation at this point, but Trump is running more as an outsider than a traditional Republican, so I don’t think there will be coattails. To be honest, I think either Trump or Cruz results in more ticket splitting than usual if they win.
building a wall
securing our borders
deporting illegal immigrants
keeping out the ones with criminal records
doing away with PC garbage in gov
ending common core
protecting 2nd amendment
taking care of Vets
Cruz wasn't clear or unequivocal on those until Trump came out for them clearly and unequivocably, starting last June. Cruz can back-fill all he wants; Trump is the one with the vision.
When you reach the point where you have received more in SS benefits than you paid in, plus a reasonable rate of interest, SS becomes welfare, paid to you by younger taxpayers.
Ditto for Medicare.
Cutting SS is not a "conservative value" nor is it a "liberal value" or any kind of value at all. It's something that is going to happen, because demographics and actuarial accounting can't be reversed by a vote.
Either we will cut SS benefits, or render them less valuable through high inflation (as Russia did), or the whole SS system will crash cataclysmically in a few decades.
Most of the "I paid in, how dare you cut it!!" crowd on FR are apparently counting on kicking the bucket before that happens, leaving their kids and grandkids with the IOU's.
When is welfare going to run out of money?
You could cut welfare to zero, and Soc Sec would still run out of money. Maybe 15-20 years later. If you plan on being dead by then, and have no kids, I guess that would be OK?
Let’s talk about cutting welfare before we get to Social Security, OK?
(1) operate as a standalone program, with its income balanced to its expenses, or
(2) have its expenses subsidized by transfers from general tax dollars?
Of course it should be privatized completely.
How do you “privatize” something that has projected deficits in excess of $50 trillion?
