It's weirder than that. It is a mini-city in a small valley surrounded by three of the most affluent towns in Marin County : Sausalito, Mill Valley and Strawberry Point/Tiburon.
Originated during WW2. For most of its existence it was almost entirely Amish.
Marin City is nothing but a big black project. I think started after WWII when the imported shipbuilders were left without Liberty ships to build. Scary place now.
