One of the best movies ever.
Yes it is. I was surprised at the sincere effort and success of a Hollywood production portraying a part of the population that is typically only mocked, if recognized at all.
Duvall was brilliant. The movie just had no weaknesses at all.
>> The pastor should have explained EXACTLY who should, and should not, be partaking
Exactly. And such explanations are made at our RC Church.
Yeah! Capitalism is evil! Oh, wait...
Capitalism is a conservative value unless conservatives are losing to a successful capitalist! There. Fixed it.
Says who?
The desperation is pathetic.
He did say he made a lot of donations to get stuff he wanted done. Maybe this is an election strategy.
He wrote it, and has acted in or written several other wonderful movies with deeply, quietly Christian themes of individuals struggling with sin. The Great Santini, Tender Mercies, A Family Thing, Secondhand Lions, Open Range and Get Low spring to mind.
“..there is no good way of knowing in advance what happens and what the proceedings are when one enters some “churches”.”
A friend of mine just graduated from Seminary after an early retirement. He had to go to other denomination’s services to see how they were done and for the “culture”.
One of them he and his wife went to was some Egyptian Orthodox Christian church or something. They were the only whites there. It lasted for six hours or something. After an hour somebody either noticed, or they asked, they were provided chairs so they could sit - but everyone else stood for the entire time.
They said it was an obvious oddity for the congregation, but everyone was gracious and the kids were most enthralled.
I don’t recall if he got the offering plate confused or not.
At our church they make a point of saying when discussing the offering stuff like “Returning a portion of what God has provided back to the church. If you are a visitor please let the plate pass.”
I understand their point that some folks might thing “Oh - here it is - the collection plate. It’s all about the money for these churches.”
On the other hand, it is (or can be) a strong way to worship if you really think about what the Offering all means, and should be for everyone. In your case I would probably have wanted out about an hour into the worship service!
I was unaware of that, as I’m more of a reader than a moviegoer. Thank you very much! New things to look forward to.

I suspect that nineteen out of twenty people who approach the man want to shake down, panhandle or wheedle some coins from him.
Somehow I doubt God needs to shake down Trump. Still, I once had an acquaintance make change out of the offering plate. What a hoot!
“Somehow I doubt God needs to shake down Trump.”
Me too, since God spun all wealth from his will and word, and the greatest wealth is intangible.
But how many ‘religious leaders’ have approached him with Cassius’ smile?
I never said any of that. I simply said Cruz sounded like he was pandering to the crowd b
