See you one Zumwalt and raise you one Russian Project 23560 “Leader Class” destroyer

Nice choice. Saw an article on that one the other day.

At either 10K or 17.5K tons displacement (both numbers given in the article) and 200 meters in length (650 feet), the planned Leader Class destroyer would make a heck of a cruiser. Oh, and nuclear powered to boot.

Thought of it as sort of a 2/3rds size Kirov battlecruiser.

That’s pretty damning stuff; makes you wonder if such exhausting studies were ever done before the keel was laid.

I did stability and trim studies as required for merchant ship masters, but they dealt more with static situations, in which as long as the GM was sufficient, you were good to go. I never studied much of the dynamic effects relating to stability. The main difference, I suppose, is that merchant ships have the option to change their head and speed, an option not always available to warships.

The X-bow ships are successful, I now see, because they have very little tumblehome and then only in the sheer strake, and the foc’s’le is much higher.

Fortunately only 2 will be built, and are in my opinion the naval equivalent of the Air Force’s F-35.

You must love the F-35 too.

I don’t ‘love’ any of them. But they are top of the line, if costly. The Zumwalts seems like very solid ships though.

And I know it’s ‘cool’ to bash the F-35, but it is the best plane in the world for many things.

Huh!! - F-35, a plane that can only do things by half measures, that is a sitting duck for a SU-31 or most anyother number to include most modern MiGs), carries almost no gun rounds, almost no bombs or missiles, is slower than most planes, severely range and altitude limited, whose ‘stealth’ tech is not really stealthy.

Best plane - most expensive plane, best for air shows and hangers. The best plane to do everything for everybody, but nothing well.

Zumwalts - Seeming is not reality. Top of the line does not have to be costly, contrary to today’s mil group think. No armament to speak of does not equal top of anything but bottom of the sea. Aluminum superstructures like fire, manned by gals who cannot carry a fire hose. Nice. Missiles love high flat sides. Nice. Only 2 to be built. Nice. Waste of money. Not nice.

Kool Aide goes on sale today ...

Did anyone else notice that this ship is not flying the flag of the United States?
