He’s western enough to be mostly sane. He’s Arabian enough to understand his subjects and to know when they’re really out for blood or just blowing off steam. When they are really out for blood, he will try to follow from the front and steer them away from the precipice, back to blowing off steam, if he can. If he can’t, all bets are off.
If they’re just blowing steam, he knows how to befuddle them and misdirect them. In other words, he’s a moderate Arab leader.
They’re a mix of Palis and Bedouins, mostly Palis. Hardly moderate, except that they enjoy the good life that comes from regular commerce with Israel.
I was using Jordon in general as being a moderate Arab nation. Maybe this is a small vocal faction.
King Abdullah is a small faction with an armed backup. The rest are nuts but unwilling to take on the armed backup. That’s moderate for you.

Well...in 1967 King Hussein got railroaded into a military pact with Egypt where his Arab Legion came under the command of that incompetent boob Abdel Hakim Amer. They all got creamed by the Israelis.
His grandfather King Abdullah of Transjordan wanted peace with the new Jewish state. For this he was assassinated. His most famous quote, made to Golda Meir during a secret meeting:
“My enemies are trying to protect me while my brethren want to kill me.”
The current King Abdullah is probably thinking much the same thing. And I’m no fan of Islam or of Arab culture.
Your assessment seems plausible. Abdullah is hard not to admire. He is presiding over a powder keg country...

The Isralies stated with raw desert and created an amazingly elegant modern State. Palestinians can do the same... or not. As long as Palestinians live within sight of Israel they'll stay hateful and jealous. The solution is for them to leave.
If they had wanted a homeland, they could have had one several times over. They just want to destroy ours.
