The F-22 should have been selected; for that matter, the F-20 Tigershark. Instead of the all-in-one-basket approach, the US military would be better off -- IOW, our national defense would be in better shape -- if smaller runs of a larger number of models were built.
The F-20 Tigershark had a very limited niche. It’s payload capacity and design were just not meant for meaningful multirole and strike missions. It would have been woefully out of date in an export market filled with the likes of Mirage-2000, Gripen and Mig-29. Not to mention the F-16.
There’s a reason why no one bought the F-20.

Israel dropped dedicated ground attack aircraft years ago. They’re only useful if air superiority is already established.
