No, not "just like" - it's caught only by those who choose to catch it. They can't "choose" to catch it because they don't understand the nature of what they caught until after they have caught it. Then it is too late to do anything about it.
This is why it is just like a dangerous pathogen. People cannot grasp the danger until it is too late to prevent the damage.

they don't understand the nature of what they caught until after they have caught it.Nonsense - the potential problems of drugs, legal and illegal, are well publicized.
Then it is too late to do anything about it.
Only in the case addiction - which doesn't happen to most users of any drug (and happens to proportionately fewer pot users than alcohol users).
