Right. If there are areas so rugged that construction of a wall would be “too costly”(?), clear ‘em if needed for unobstructed line of sight, and post Border Patrol agents as needed.
Let’s say it costs $250k per year to put an agent in the field, and equip. / arm him / her adequately. If we post agents every 2000 ft. apart along the ENTIRE length of the border, the cost is under $1.5 billion per year. Operation of armed drones is a bit pricey, but they can cover a lot of ground...

It should also be pointed out, though I’m sure that many Freepers are well aware of it, that surveillance and target recognition technology these days is VERY good. Some of it can even be done from space, of course: I remember some years back how startled I was when I realized I could make out my freaking (terrestrial reception) outdoor TV antenna on Google’s and Bing’s views from space. Obviously, our gov’t has capability at least 10x better. (I’m sure some Freeper can enlighten us.)

You are correct about low birth rates, but why would that result from building a wall? I'm inclined to think that making it more economically practical for solid citizens to have children would have a positive effect on the birthrate of that part of the populace.
We need a wall—and a chain of forts—a whole new military arm to man the wall to keep people out. I would add, mines, razor wire, motes, alligators, machine guns, Fast Armored Cars—a strip of land 5 miles wide—conceed no American land to the Cartels. I would use Old Prop Driven fighter planes to strafe any who try to cross the border. Make it air tight! No people, No drugs, no trade goods (unless taxes) -—make it not just a wall—make it the 8th Wonder of the World! Make it a tourist attraction—a symbol of the new America—Patsies no more!

Jebbies math is wrong. At $100 per foot... 2^3mi x 5^3 ft x 1^2$ is 1 billion. So for a really expensive wall, say $1000 per foot it would only cost 10 billion.

The "rugged terrain" where you can't build a wall is much harder to cross. Building a good, effective wall along all the easy crossings would stop most illegals. That's a huge improvement over today's strategy of feeding them and transporting them to wherever their illegal families and friends are living.

I suppose Jeb would rather we’d mine the entire area or put soldiers shoulder to shoulder armed with guns and real bullets and instructions to shoot to kill anything that moved. What we are doing now doesn’t work. Try something different. Maybe “they” are right and the wall won’t work - if the wall doesn’t work, try something else after that - but TRY.
