Though Reagan made it clear than he had religious values, he kept it very general; his personal religious odyssey was never front and center. Reagan unified American against national decline and the liberal drift toward communism, without fracturing the Right, and was elected with substantial support from “conservative Democrats” (these existed back then). He gave lip service to “social issues” and did pretty much zip about them when in office.
I suspect Cruz is the more intelligent man, and that he and Reagan have similar views on issues. Reagan had the rare political skill of holding polarizing positions while remaining likeable. Cruz has chosen the polarizing part, and the majority of voters probably think he means to act on it. I think he could do more good as Attorney General than President.
