Apparently, category is based on intensity rather than reach. Ike reached Cat 4 before it hit landfall in Texas.

It is so "lucky" that the sunspot cycle is in its hibernation mode and the atmosphere and oceans have been cooling to a level that does not support so many storms.

Growing up in the 70s and being educated by the then, socialist/Marxist public school system, I remember reading one of those weekly “scare the heck out of children” pamphlets we received in class during my elementary years, quotes from the greatest socialist/atheist scientific minds on global warming, that by 2010, we would be in a apocalypse survival mode, due to cataclysmic events worldwide.
