That is a favorite tactic of the left, to compare today’s anti-immigrant sentiment to that of the past (particularly the Know-Nothings), and conclude that since the Know-Nothings lost then, they’ll lose again now.
But that ignores the level of immigration. I don’t believe it was ever as high as it is now. And in any event, since there was no welfare state, immigrants were less of a burden.
Thus, there are a lot more citizens concerned about it now than in the past, so there’s a better chance to rein it in.
