That Crichton speech proves my point--the average automobile within 50 years from now mechanically won't be anything like we see now. After all, no one back in 1985 would have believed people would be driving a car like my 2015 Honda Fit: smaller physically outside than most cars of 1985, roomier inside than many cars of 1985, and using technology in terms of safety and drivetrain technology they couldn't have imagined in 1985.

Believe it or not cars, trucks, buses can be run off of wood gases.
The thermal chemical processes is called gasification.
It was used extensively in the Scandinavian countries during WWII, the USA mass produced gasifiers for Europe.
Cars, trucks, buses, electric generators could be run off of biomass agriculture waste, from corn stalks, to pruning from trees, tree leaves, yard waste, peanut shells, sun flower shells, walnut shells, farm waste.
All of that waste bio mass agriculture waste can be turned into pellets, or larger diameter sizes depending on the application.
All if that can be used instead of being put into landfills.
Gases from a gasifier burns more cleanly than gasoline if done right.
Outdoor furnaces can be made to even burn plastics set at a higher tempetures and burn cleanly.
True. Solid point. And it becomes a meaningless exercise to think we can design cars 50 years hence to meet political goals.

Actually, we’re almost there with a self-driving car for freeway use. I wouldn’t be surprised that by 2020, we can buy cars with true hands off driving experience on our Interstates—including automatic adjustment for traffic flow even if there is an accident or construction impeding the flow of traffic.
