“But in a transition process heavily based on economic reforms, the real challenge facing Cubans is not removing the Castro’s communist regime, but tackling corruption.

“The black market is a form of corruption. Most people in Cuba find jobs not because of a salary but because other perks they may have at that job,”...”

Did the idiot that wrote this stop to think that the black market is created when the gov’t makes goods unattainable by free market?

All together now, children; one, two, three:

"Castro is Batista’s avarice alloyed with Guevara’s blood lust."

Very well put. How two well to do sons of a United Fruit exec. turned out like Fidel and Raoul, is beyond me.

Communists and democrats sell the ‘you can get something for nothing’ meme. It's a free lunch sell - and it's relatively easy. Democrats adjust it for the gullible - dress it up as compassion...

The ‘sell’ to black criminals adds the twist that ‘you too can be respected’ while acting like a thug... It's also a lie...

It's the promise of a return to childhood - where YOU get - and others give. Childhood - you GET Christmas presents - Mommy and Daddy GIVE. Except in real life parents expect their young to grow up. Peter Pan at 50 is creepy. The folks who promise that 'you can receive without giving' are con artists - manipulators playing on gullibility of people they're going to take... That's why the communist message and democrat-lite message sells.

Communism is feudalism.

Bump. King, nobles, peasants (with an occasional merchant class).

Well somebody corrupted those two. Batista should have dropped the hammer on Fidel when he had a chance.

“Some kind of chicken...”

Must have been a leg or thigh, I never saw a chicken breast on any trips to the Island, normal Cubans don't get white meat. Castro being “more equal” he probably gets KFC flown in

There's a joke in there about Sharpton and no white meat in Cuba but I'll let someone else go there.

I hate Batista, but yours is a cheap shot that denotes factual ignorance about Cuba before Castro.

Under Batista there were in Cuba a grand total of three gambling casinos, the biggest was at the Tropicana and featured ten gambling tables and thirty slot machines, the Hotel Nacional, featured seven roulette wheels and twenty-one slot machines. “By contrast, in 1955 the single Riviera Casino in Las Vegas featured twenty tables and one hundred and sixteen slot machines. This means that in 1955: one Las Vegas Casino had more gambling action than all of Cuba.
