Without Walesa and Solidarnosc, the Wall is still there.

At a Kiwanis convention in Nashville several years ago, I met an officer stationed in Berlin when the wall came down. His dad was an officer stationed there when it was built.

...and the socialists at the State Dept believed the “tear down this wall” was too confrontational.
But Reagan knew exactly what needed to be said. He was extraordinary.

The day's events began with a brass band playing, evoking the trumpets which brought down the walls of the biblical city of Jericho.
Chancellor Merkel, who grew up in East Germany, and other officials laid roses in one of the remaining sections of the wall. --linky

A dark moment for Democrats and other Leftists everywhere. Of course, they all say it was Gorby, and not Reagan who was responsible for the Wall coming down.

There was another event, that rarely gets mentioned as a catalyst, the Tiananmen Square protests which had taken place a few months before, this certainly provided inspiration to those behind the Iron Curtain.
