You cannot win without those principles, as has been proven over and over and yet over again.

No, it was the way of compromise that was followed - The product presented in those elections was not what people wanted, hence failure.
Conservatism was not found in either of those elections... Rather, both were represented by the very nemesis of Conservatism.
