One more question for Mr. Quammen: If the United States is wiped out by Ebola, who will pay to support Liberia?

Obama (and the political class) do not want to shut down travel from West Africa for the same reason abortion extremists insist that it's okay to perform post-birth abortions.

Because giving an inch on the extreme case -- even giving an inch on the most indefensible part of your agenda -- is thought to create some momentum against the more defensible parts of your agenda.

They don't want to give an inch on partial-birth abortions because they don't want to give an inch on non-partial-birth abortions.

In the case of a West Africa travel ban, this could create some small amount of political momentum, as Krikorian suggests, towards controlling our borders in other cases -- for example, controlling illegal immigration at our southern border.

Which, by the way, is at least suspected of being the pathway for the enterovirus which is now leaving American kids paralyzed. (Hm, I don't hear any loud calls for an investigation to discover how enterovirus entered the United States.)

So, because Obama (and other members of the political class) can't risk the slightest nod in the direction of controlling our border -- they have too many political chips riding on that bet -- we're all just going to have run the risk of a little ebola.

We're just gonna have to hope.

Yes, becuase the US was one of the first countries to outlaw slavery and because they tried to make amends and repatriate freed slaves, they MUST be punished by taking their chances with deadly infectious diseases.

This guy needs to up the voltage on his home electroshock therapy, preferably to 4160.

A sad commentary on our society is that these statements are made, and taken seriously, instead of as fodder for standup comedians.

Wasn’t Liberia the place that freed slaves were to go to if they chose?

It was a freaking US colony, specifically for Freed slaves. It seems we’ve already paid the dues.

MENTALLY RETARDED. This man’s brain stopped developing in a certain way, at a certain age. This is true of all leftists.

Here’s a hypothetical David. Suppose a Liberian had somehow become highly radioactive and anyone who came within a mile of him would get fatally poisoned by radiation. Should we still let him in? How about everyone within 100 miles, or 1000? Is there any scenario in which the potential harm to living, breathing Americans would outweigh harm done in the past by slave owners who lived in America before us, despite the fact that only a tiny percentage of today’s citizenry can trace their roots back to those slave owners.

It’s a kind of Catch-22. The left went insane while Bush was office-they elected Obola, who in turn further fostered an atmosphere conducive to the luxuriant growth of their weeds of insanity.

I do NOT take responsibility for something that someone else did 200 years ago!

Does the United States then deserve a large cut of any prosperity in Europe because we freed them from the Nazis?

Does Egypt owe reparations to the Jews for what they did to them 3000 years ago?

...Didn't think so...

Loony Left indeed. Liberia was the country tow which US blacks emigrated and then turned around and subjugated the African blacks who lived there. The entire history of the country is about US blacks going there and then acting out on their power lust, greed and more crass desires.

WE have absolutely no responsibility to Africans, or African-Americans, whatsoever. They were brought here around four hundred years ago and sadly, became slaves. Frankly, because only the strongest, healthiest and most intelligent were enslaved, thus creating a physically superior race. The black Americans have absolutely ZERO respect for their ancestors and the fact that they sacrificed much to advance their race, maybe unknowingly, but they did. So, what does the black community of today do? They want to continue to be enslaved.

I guess it doesn’t matter that many blacks, and whites will be infected and die here in America.

This guy is a stupid fool.

Not to mention, we already paid, For that matter, the fact of the existence of Liberia was a part of the payment.

“White man’s burden”, indeed. I’ve got news for these losers-the ones who have to pay, get to call the tune, sooner or later.

An aside from the sheer madness of this point about slavery and the history of Liberia, the nonsense of "group-guilt," was the man's insistence that we can't close borders or isolate nations.

How does he account for the nations free of Ebola that are bordered or completely surrounded by the countries with Five Alarm breakouts?

Now, he's either ignorant of the facts or deliberately lying. It's that simple.
