Recumbents are indeed a good deal more dangerous for exactly this reason. Smart riders attach a flag or something, but that only helps some, it doesn’t solve the visibility problem.

BTW, riding at night is a lot less dangerous than it used to be.

They now have very reasonably priced LED lights that are brighter than a car’s headlights. I suspect I’m in general more easily visible at night than in the daytime.

And carrying a gun is too bulky.

One local roadie used to complain about not getting enough berth from passing vehicles. Subsequently he mounted a holster to his stem and took a handgun along on his rides. His complaints dropped considerably.
