I had heard a lens grinder fell into his machine and made a spectacle of himself.

Tree trimmers should never work alone .. this is what happens. With no one else there - nobody turns off the chipper while the person is still outside the clutches of the blades.
We had it happen here in SD. Really sad. The company made a fast and hard rule - “you can never work alone”.

Here in Miami, a chap(pilot IIRC) decided to rent a chipper, put it on his boat and took wifey out for a “fish & chips” day in the Gulfstream.
Afterward he chipped her he returned the chipper to the rental shop.
Wudda worked except he forgot to clean all of wifey out of the chipper before returning it.

by now we have all heard stories similar to this, its often the victim simply falling out of the tree he is pruning.don’t these guys take any precautionary measures?like they do when building a skyscraper?

I was raised better than that. My father taught me to return something in better condition than it was when I borrowed it. I would’ve thoroughly cleaned the wife out of it and oiled ‘er up before bringing it back.

Or the brewer who fell into a vat of beer and drowned.
His tracks showed that he got out a few times to pee.

Some older models do not have a ‘controlled feed’or a safety (shut-off) bar.
We have one of these, and you really pay attention when using it.
Most often what happens is a gloved hand gets caught in branches.
