My condolences and prayers to your family. There is no need; they came back safely. What was of interest to me in your post is that it made me clearer about their awareness of the hazards they might face when they chose to go there.

That was a conspiracy theory advanced by British socialist Anthony Sampson back in the 70's. It was bunk and he retracted it in later editions of his book. Some oil has recently been discovered in VietNam by the French company Total but it is a minor find and most of it is offshore deep ocean.

Read the accounts of the boat people. Some mention having to be very quiet and dark while slipping past the oil platforms in the delta.
