Exactly! Spot on, wildbill!
IMO the ONLY goal of higher education, or for that matter like learning a trade, is to develop the skills that will help facilitate employment.
true
You did several things correctly that others could learn from:
1. You had a plan for post-graduation.
2. While that plan didn't work out, you didn't compound the problem by doubling-down: you didn't accumulate lots of extra student loans getting a Master's or Ph.D. in History!
3. You assessed the situation, were flexible, and sought and pursued an alternative career. You chose one in which you could be trained quickly, and one in which was probably pretty lucrative. Certainly much more so than waiting tables or making lattes at Starbucks.
Good for you.
There was a time when college degrees were not so ubiquitous, that a diploma represented a serious achievement by a teen or young adult. My uncle was an officer in personnel for a large Texas company and he told me, “It’s a passport. It doesn’t mean a damn thing unless it is in engineering or some such tech field, but you’re damned without one because it shows you will stick to a difficult pathway to a goal and succeed.”
Now, not so much. Too many unqualified students who aren’t really interested and way too many graduates in arcane subjects of interest only to about 31 people worldwide.
Exactly. Your uncle was very wise.
Or learning a trade. If a person is going to sacrifice a large chunk of their lives and wealth, it had better pay for itself.
