I sense the article is a bit off target.

First, last year in talking to a well educated private guide in St. Petersburg, Lenin is viewed by modern Russians as one of a group of paid political agitators sent by Germany to destroy the power of Russia. Modern educated Russians also have a very dim view of Stalin. Their parents after they learned of some of the things that Stalin did to the people of the Soviet Union feel betrayed. The current generation has a lot of distrust of historic Soviet leaders.

Lenin was a horrible mass murderer. To find out more about Lenin's nature one needs to understand the Lenin Hanging Orders and how he taught Stalin about arbitrary murder to create a society of fear.

Shameful, twisting the minds of children into worshipping the baldheaded little Kalmyk b@stard who wreaked such hell upon Russia. Young Pioneers should be banned.

I was in Uzbekistan ten years ago & the young people there who were only kids in 1991 were nostalgic for the glories of the Soviet Union where food was abundant, everyone was employed & vacationed in Crimea every summer.

One young woman looked me in the eye & declared, “I want you to know one thing: I admire Josef Stalin!”

“Because he killed seventy million people?”, I shot back.

“You need a strong hand to rule a vast nation like the USSR!”, she replied unfazed, in perfect English.

Good afternoon. I hope you are doing well.

“You need a strong hand to rule a vast nation like the USSR!”, she replied unfazed, in perfect English.

I was in a border town (Ezrum) in TU trading with Ivan back in '78. Somehow Stalin came up (yes, it was in 1978 and too much vodka). He said, "Stalin was great man. Saved country." I asked, what about all the Ukrainians he killed? "Oh, the Nazi did that."

What can you do?

I wonder how many of her relatives were taken away in the dead of night for no reason under Stalin’s rule?

It’s real easy to admire the guy with 60+ years removed from his rule.

In UZ I studied Russian with two middle aged women who were interpreters for the U.S. base. One was Uzbek, the other a Kazakh who relocated to UZ.

Unlike the young women, these had no illusions about communism & told me about relatives who disappeared in the night & about whom they were forbidden to speak ever again. They hated being addressed as “comrade” at endless political meetings, since in Central Asia people are addressed by their given names. Although like most Uzbeks I met the women admired Russian culture and secular society, their hatred for Soviet communism was total.

Both interpreters would embrace Christianity, I later learned.

This will bring a tear to the eyes of Putinista/Westboro wing of FReeRepublic that cannot differentiate between conservative opposition to the moron Obama and their statist Putin.

Uzbeks, they are the weak link in the great chain of socialism.

He’s certainly popular in the White House, no question about it.

Yes, I’ve read the hanging orders before. Seems to me the Russians, even today, need something to put the terrible history behind them, lest they repeat it. Perhaps a Maidan in Moscow.

Or like those who don’t live under Putin yet admire him.

I agree. It’s the same, and Putinistas have the same stabbed in the back theory.

If you even kept your yard nice, you were a kulak and a counter revolutionary, and subject to disappearing in the middle of the night.

Lenin is one of the most under estimated monsters in the Twentieth Century's rogues gallery of monsters.

Idiots. Do they even know Lenin was a traitor? That his own downfall to ridcule his kool aid drinkers was his biggest planned joke?

Lenin killed about 5 million civilians that we know for sure of, compared to about 20 by Stalin and 70 by Mao. But when you get into those kind of numbers, do the differences really matter? Lenin, being a true communist despite what the naïve idealists say, held a murderous hatred of anyone who ran a business, showed any individualism, or otherwise displayed a hint of entrepreneurism. And the Chekas he maintained were murderous drug addicts that he allowed to freely act out their own personal vendettas.

We have a new name for Lenin’s Birthday. It’s called EARTH DAY, and the first Earth Day was EXACTLY on the 100th anniversary of the day Lenin was born.

LOL. 13% has a positive perception of Lenin in Russia.
What about over 30% of Americans under 30 yo who have positive perception of socialism?
Who are on the tracks to be a more communist country in a few decades?
