Into Thin Air is nothing more than Krakauer trying to blame everyone else for hiding in his tent and doing nothing during the 96 tragedy. I was in EBC when that went down. He isnt qualified to carry the toilet bag of his main scapegoat, Anatoli Boukrev.
I never climb at any time with pre fixed ropes except Rainer with friends. Every other mountain I’ve summited has been as a two man team, just me and a Sherpa. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it you cranky old cuss. But keep babbling, your ignorance is amusing.
That first climb was in 96. I did two that trip, both within 1 day walking of EBC. Everest for me was cost prohibitive. Single permits at the time were around $15K because you had to buy it as an extra from one of the larger expeditions and there are many other fees and shared expenses.Minimum cost all in would have been $35 to $40K and only that low because I knew and could hire my own team. The lesser peaks only cost a couple of hundred per permit and there aren’t any department of tourism or department of the interior liaison fees, rope fixing fees, oxygen fees etc.
Trekking and doing a couple of walk-up peaks in the area is incredibly inexpensive. You could spend a month trekking including shuttle airfare from Kathmandu to Lukla and back for no more than $1500.
I stand corrected.
An update from Alan Arnette’s blog: Casualties, teams leaving, Sherpa demands from Nepal Tourism. (Discovery LIVE has cancelled the jump from Everest) IMHO, Sherpa demands are not outrageous. I wonder how this will effect the climbing/tourism industry in Nepal?

Apparently just wealthy white people. Sherpas climb it every day without making a fuss.
