Labelled the "Biggest Band in the World" by Rolling Stone Magazine, they are by default Ireland's most successful musical export. U2 have released 12 studio albums and are among the best-selling music artists of all-time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide. They have won 22 Grammy Awards (among 35 nominations), more than any other band, and in 2005, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility, an exceedingly remarkable accomplishment. Rolling Stone ranked U2 at number 22 in its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".

Although complete tomes have been dedicated to U2's influence and artistry, few have delved into the band's Irish heritage outside of their many political (e.g. "Sunday Bloody Sunday"; "Mothers Of The Disappeared") and spiritual writing themes ("In God's Country"; "If God Will Send His Angels"). However, in analyzing the composition of many of their most enduring and popular songs, one can clearly identify the basic structure of a traditional Irish reel. The simple alla breve meters, the droning quaver movement with accents on the first and third beats of the bar (despite the drumming backbeats on 2 and 4), and the standard (AABB) and (ABAB) formats all meet the criteria. Of course U2's music is laced with syncopation, modern effects and techniques, but when played acoustically on traditional Irish instruments, many of their trademark songs meet all the guidelines of the ancient reels of old including eight bar phrases, divisible into four-bar and two-bar sub groups. U2 are not just a band from Ireland, they often produce authentic Irish music in both structure and content.
