On interstates I have a method that works great and is safe. I determine prevailing speed and then increase maybe 5 mph until I’m well clear of other traffic then I maintain a speed where I am not being passed much nor am I passing much. This avoids pack driving which is the most dangerous.

Always a good plan.

My daughter uses the same concept in barrel racing (horse) lessons.

That's a method recommended for motorcyclists, especially. Ride a little faster than the average speed, and try to stay in the holes between packs.

Passing or being passed puts you in close proximity to another vehicle, and you want to control when and where those events happen as much as possible. That's easier to do if you're the one passing.

The 55mph drivers might be county&state workers-shirkers. They have leeway on getting to work on time. Those who labor in the dreaded private sector can not afford to be so relaxed.

Yeap and I’m always looking for an out I can go just in case. I live 20 miles north of Knoxville. Malfunction Junction where I-75 and 40 meet is the second worse interstate system in the southeast. I 40 going west is like playing the old video arcade game Pole Position. I live up I-75 north and avoid I 40 west as much as possible.

The safest speed is actually above the average. That curve is skewed significant;y to the right.

But be careful about reading too much into this.

It does not mean that one become safer by driving a little faster (if one is a slow driver). That slow driver, may be drunk, elderly, distracted, or an addle-brained-Freeper.

Note the log scale at left. Those who drive 30MPH below the average speed have a collision rate that is 1000x the rate for average-speed drivers!

When I see a commercial vehicle (like a construction company pickup) driving slower than the prevailing speed, I think: “On the clock”. (Either that, or “on the phone”).

Actually I am a pretty moderate driver myself but if others want to speed it’s not my business. I do speed up and don’t mind going over the limit to keep from clogging the passing lane. To me it’s just common sense.

Oh get off it. If you think there’s no connection between alcohol and traffic deaths, there’s no further reason for discussion.

By obeying traffic laws, a person is “imposing” his will on others. Nice reasoning.

I stated I’m not for setting artificially low speed limits. I merely stated that if everybody drives slower, there’s less chance of an accident. Which of course is absolutely true. Don’t pursue arguments the other person hasn’t made.

Again, I’m not for lowering speed limits...I’m actually for raising them in my state of Wisconsin. The speed limit should be set at whatever a reasonable degree of safety can be expected. If they can create roads and cars engineered that people could drive 100 mph on the highways without undue traffic accidents/fatalities, that’s fine with me.

If you are intentionally blocking the passing lane, you are not obeying the traffic laws.

Run your car into a tree at slow speed and take a picture.

Then do it again at high speed and take another picture.

Then compare.

It’s a good thing to stay out of certain areas — or you risk provoking the locals into being forced to have to, against their will, target you in a knockout game.

The very fact that you are on their street, Barney, is an act of passive aggression.

Irrelevant.

We were talking about the CAUSE of accidents
