Those 55M people would have come of age as Americans, many college and technically trained and skilled, and would have circumvented the need for the immigrant wave of the 1990s when our native population base couldn't fill all the jobs the economy created.
These were the jobs Americans weren't willing to do? How about, these were the jobs for which the applicant had been murdered before he/she had a chance to read the want ads.

Americans want $25/hour to pick strawberries. Why would a farmer pay that when he can get the legal braceros to do it for a fraction of that?
