A test pilot of my acquaintance liked to talk about his adventures. Which is why “Equalizing weapon" is a fine description of a gun purchased, as nearly all are, for defensive purposes.There are thousands of gun owners for each gun murder committed in a given year, and it’s not likely that a given gun murder was committed by an owner whose possession of the gun would have stood legal scrutiny even before the murder. So it’s clear that guns are bought almost exclusively for defensive purposes - and that fact has a halo effect tending to make criminals less brazen and more circumspect than they otherwise might be.
