Im quite sure that after the Bay of Pigs Eisenhower knew that. But in historical retrospect, Eisenhower would not rate as a conservative today, and he beat conservatives Taft (with a token boomlet for McArthur) for the Republican nomination. But the tipoff is the fact that Eisenhower could have had the Democratic nomination for the asking; both parties courted him.Khrushchev wouldve almost certainly never tried that missile in Cuba crap on Dick Nixon, and I dont see Nixon abandoning the Bay of Pigs invasion.
Well, the occasion for the missiles wouldnt have arisen if the Bay of Pigs had been a success instead of a disaster. The interesting question is whether the Berlin Wall would still have gone up, and how Nixon would have reacted if so.
