That’s one pretty scary scenario you cooked up there.

Look, it is a SAM.

I wonder if the Wild Weasels are still flying?

“...could not find or destroy during Desert Storm...”

Do you believe Iran has advanced as far as we have?

Standing orders to fire only work if you have something to shoot at.

The only concern I have is the willpower for the U.S. to use the force necessary.

Yeah, and guys like you thought in 1940 that those stupid cross-eyed Japs only make crappy airplanes, and would never DARE to take on the mighty US Navy!

We’ve heard that song before, Larry. It doesn’t end well.

The important part of the new equation is the asymmetry of goals. All they have to do is manage to launch an ASCM every few days, an easy task, to attain their war aims.

We need to find and destroy every single one of their hidden mobile launchers.

So let’s say we’ve improved since Desert Storm, when we found and destroyed zero SCUDs prior to launch. And even though it is far easier to hide, and then launch, horizontally fired solid-fueled ASCMs than SCUDs, let’s say we can get 50% of them. (Compared to ZERO giant SCUDs 2o years ago.)

Finding and destroying 50% of their ASCMs, or even 80%, means they win, we lose.

Their goal is to START a world war. Ours is to find and destroy 100% of their ASCMs.

You really sound foolishly cocky, like the naval planners in 1940 who, applying our thinking to the Japanese, discounted their threat.

And the Iranians have a much easier mission than attacking Pearl Harbor from thousands of miles away. All they have to do is pull out of caves and launch missiles at the Hormuz. Hitting ships is totally a bonus, not required to attain their own goals.

Asymmetry at its most asymmetrical.

When the launch vehicle costs only about 5% of the missile, it’s expendable for a war shot.

But not for training, hence the training vehicle in the photo.

This is pretty basic stuff, don’t you agree?

It is to me. And it’s disappointing, reading the comments here.

To me, they are no different than reading, “Those Japanese are not stupid enough to attack,” back in the summer of 1941.

This is a version of the Soviet П-15 Термит (Termite). It was known to NATO as the SSN-2 Styx. The Chinese version was known as a Silkworm. It is 50's technology.

They are about as stealthy as a B-17. It was obsolete for naval combat purposes forty years ago.

I'm sure you know this but other FReepers wouldn't necessarily know it.

True, it was welded up pretty tight.

- The opportunity to simultaneously damage their nuclear capacity would be worth it.

It was obsolete for naval combat purposes forty years ago.

It only took a rubber raft full of explosives to cripple an American guided missile cruiser. Don't underestimate "obsolete" weapons. They're still more than capable of killing unarmed commercial boats, especially if they're fired by the hundreds.

Do you not get the point that hitting ships is beside the point? All the Iranians need to do is manage to LAUNCH them every few days to attain their goal of stopping tankers sailing through the Hormuz, due to the cancellation of their insurance.

Is this really so hard to understand?

And their 100s of hidden mobile Silkworms can do that as well as any ASCMs.

But putting that aside, the Iranians also have modern ASCMs such as the supersonic sea-skimming Moskits/Sunburns.

To me, it sounds just like, “Those Japs are not stupid enough to attack with their crappy airplanes! They have to be smart enough to know we'd whip their asses back to Tokyo!”

Don't apply Western thought processes to mad mullahs who are eager to start WW3, believing it is a necessary step to bringing the 12th Mahdi and ultimate islamic victory.

Sure they're crazy, and it won't succeed.

But the Japanese were not even that crazy, and they still attacked, despite our analysts believing otherwise.

Exactly. Or look at what box cutters can do to tall buildings, given the proper application.

Crazy (from our POV) is not the same as stupid.

I don’t get it either. As you said, they don’t even have to hit anything. All they need to do is present a credible threat to free navigation and that Strait is shut down, period.

It’d take the US Navy months to knock out enough launchers to get traffic flowing again and that’s assuming that Obama would actually attack. And as far as him doing what Reagan did, reflagging all those tankers to US, that ain’t gonna happen.

These mullahs are what psych types call “other directed” and there’s no telling what they’re capable of.

I fully appreciate this and agree with you.

Economic attacks are no less a cause for war than direct attacks on another country's military or territory.

Well there is a way to stop them in their tracks; if we were willing to do what is necessary. Hint: It’s the same thing that ended the Japanese onslaught.

Looks like they have to put fire blankets over the tires.

Wonderful IR signature!

Of course, the missile is in its way by then.

Kinda looks like the old Matador missile from the 50's, doesn't it?
