This was an interstate swindle. It would seem equally logical for Mississippi to have tried the man, as Texas. Actually why wasn’t it a Federal case — literally?

Anyhow, I would anticipate seeing this get bounced up to appeals courts and cut to something between 10 and 20 years, and maybe a large chunk of that being probation.

Agreed. A million dollar swindle is peanuts. My bet is the sentence will be reduced drastically on appeal.

Speaking of assinine, what are you, a cattle rustler?
If I raise 400 beef cattle, and sell them to someone who doesn’t pay me, I’ve lost my whole year’s income.
Now I can’t pay any of my bills and lose my farm. My kids need to eat and have clothes to wear.
Contrary to what you may think, most cattle are raised by the little guy. This can be devestating to them.
The SOB got off light!!!
PS; Most have far fewer than 400.

without looking at the overall picture or how similar thefts are penalized for others

I don't see how poor sentencing in other cases justifies continuing the practice in this case.

I agree the others you mentioned got off too light.

I disagree this thief was sentenced harshly.

You turn the key and you solely pay for his keep for the next 99 years without recourse, until the ranchers are fully compensated and punitive measures exercised.

Ranch economics frequently rely on some of that stock being used as food for the ranchers. If the economy continues the downward spiral, the rustling might well cost lives.

Doesn’t pay to steal. Under castle doctrine you could get shot instead of a trial and sentencing. Don’t mess with Texas.

You are missing the point.

This guy didn’t just “steal a few cows.”

He was a serial offender, multiple instances. It was a three-strikes-you’re-out situation.

This guy is, in simple terms, a bad man. He needed to be locked up for good.

“In the deal Curry used the name Earnest Jackson”

I guess in making the deal Curry was not in earnest. ;)

99 years is asinine.

You're right. They should have hanged him.

Wonder why it took so long to catch him. Did he just get a slap on the wrist for the first two swindles? That ought to have earned him and his fingerprint a good blacklisting as well as any criminal penalties.

In the old days, if you wanted to steal cows, you didn’t write a rubber check to a rancher. You physically herded the contraband away under cover of darkness. Even cattle thieves have gone soft.
