Not just teachers, but all government employees. My mom does tech support for one of the state departments, and she’s required to be in the teachers’ union. She’s not exactly quiet about her distaste for the union, especially when they call on the phone and try to tell her who to vote for!

I don't know how the NEA will ever be taken down a step or two. The Dems give them everything they desire. The Repubs don't want to be seen as anti education. The NEA and ultra left members that really are a minority in our schools always seem to get what want.
I guess teachers should be held accountable, but so should parents. My wife's class, every single kid passed the benchmarks for the last 4-5 years, mostly Indians that suffer FAS and family problems too. That tells me some teachers are doing better than others. NCLB held teachers accountable, but not parents. Also in various low income areas, hardly any of the kids pass the state wide tests, all the blame doesn't belong on the teachers either.
Seriously though, all the politics tends to drive many good teachers from our schools. It gets old and very depressing.

From what I’ve seen - that is not the norm. I can think of a small number, sure - but most were considered to be good teachers. Some were encouraged by higher-ups to get certified, while others simply wanted a change and earn more money.

We are low income and have a good pass rate. We do, however, live in a more conservative area. I’m sure most of the teachers are registered dems, but I would guess they are more “old style” than this semi-marxist thing we are seeing now in DC. Many christians and conservatives too.
I don’t know how you bring down the NEA, when they’ve managed to have their demands written into state law.
It would have to take an amendment to our state constitution to get some much needed change.
