That's exactly what Virginia did with the Hampton Roads tunnel.
Trucks easily cause 6 times the wear and tear as cars.
Tolls on the San Francisco Bay Area bridges are similar amounts. Most car tolls are $5.

I have an annual pass for the Hatem Bridge. I went over the other day pulling a whopping 500 lb trailer and got dinged $15. Annual pass doesn’t count if you have a trailer. In 2013, the fee will be $24. Guess what bridge I’m not going across with a trailer anymore.
The fee to cross this little 1.3 mile bridge is higher than crossing the 5 mile long Mackinac Bridge in Michigan, considered one of the world’s greatest feats of engineering.
That may be so, but trucking companies not doing business in Maryland due to skyrocketing tolls could cost us highway money as well (not as much revenue from diesel taxes).
The Hampton-Roads-area pols are thinking of putting tolls back on the HRBT and other facilities to fund more transportation infrastructure projects, such as a third Hampton Roads crossing.
Wow, you go that far north? I take West Chestnut Hill Rd. after getting off at Rt. 896 in Delaware. Before turning right on Iron Hill Road, there’s a sign for a dead end. It looks like a country backstreet taking that route—such a contrast to driving the interstate—and I can’t help but think of all the suckers who get stuck at the toll plaza and willing shell out $4.00 every time I go that way!
