Pastor Terry Jones imprisoned to prevent Detroit Koran protest
The Telegraph ^ | 4/23/2011

The US pastor whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly violence in Afghanistan was briefly jailed in a heavily Islamic suburb on Friday after a court banned his protest outside a mosque.

A local judge jailed Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida and his associate Wayne Sapp after a court found their planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, could lead to violence.

During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."

He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

"The First Amendment does us no good if it confines us to saying what is popular," he pointed out.

But Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents, and argued that his protest could lead to violence if allowed.

Prosecutor Robert Moran argued that the protest had nothing to do with the First Amendment and at stake were security and peace in the community.

The jury sided with the prosecution and Judge Mark Somers set bond at the symbolic amount of $1 each for the two pastors, which they initially refused to pay.

Following their refusal, both were escorted to a local jail. But local media reported both men changed their minds after spending about an hour behind bars and posted the $1 bond.

Under the judge's ruling, both Pastor Jones and Mr Sapp are now prohibited by the court from going to the mosque for three years.

But Pastor Jones was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying the two "will come back next week" to try to organise a new protest.

“What purpose does burning Korans in Florida or Michigan serve? “

It serves notice to Islamists that some in our society are on to them. That some don’t buy into their pedophilia based “religion of peace.” That some are fearless, and are not intimidated by their threats.

Speak for yourself. I’m drinking water.

I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I think there’s an element of truth to it.

So, you’d see no problem with a locality running muslims out of town and out of the county to eliminate the possibility of any negative issues endemic to that particular cult arising in the future?

Local control, local solutions.

Constitutional issues be damned.

We have a winner!

Would you find it offensive if people burned Bibles to protest Westboro Baptist Church? Why or why not?

N00B, I don’t belong to you.

My faith, belongs to my country, my ancestors (which we must share somewhere) and our right to protect our personal property.

It has nothing to do with an idiot *pastor* who is white and who is nothing more than a white Al Sharpton.

Do some more homework as not to make a fool of yourself.

According to the precedent you advocate, Jones could be prevented from burning the Koran in any US neighborhood (though burning the Bible permitted since Christians are second-class citizens).

When’s the last time you heard of Christians rioting for days because a Bible was burned?

“It’s provocative and unnecessary serving no purpose.”

The good thing about the first amendment is that your opinion, or that of the Muslim police chief in Dearborn, should be completely irrelevant. That you think it serves no purpose is irrelevant. It’s political speech. It’s protected.

That he can provoke guards your right to have such measurably moderate things to say. It guards my right to say that all non-citizen Muslims should be deported tomorrow and that all immigration of Muslims should stop and that all mosques taking foreign money should be shut down today.

That he was jailed is an outrage and should be very worrying to all of us. That a Muslim police chief feels free to do this is a measure of the confidence of the Muslim community that America will do nothing to defend itself against Sharia and burkhas for their granddaughters.

I hope the chief and the dept. is sued for tons of money for violating the guy’s civil rights. But that won’t happen because the jury will be from Dearborn.

The Torah is the holy book of the Jews, the Bible is the holy book of Christians, and the Koran is the holy book for Muslims.

But you knew that.

Burning the holy book of any religion is an inflammatory and insulting act for those of that particular religion.

But you knew that, too.

“TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 13 > § 242
§ 242. Deprivation of rights under color of law

Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States, or to different punishments, pains, or penalties, on account of such person being an alien, or by reason of his color, or race, than are prescribed for the punishment of citizens, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if bodily injury results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include the use, attempted use, or threatened use of a dangerous weapon, explosives, or fire, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and if death results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, shall be fined under this title, or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death.”

True. But find me a Federal prosecutor (dept. run by Eric Holder) who would arrest a Muslim police chief for squashing dissent against Muslims. That is as likely as black panthers wielding nightsticks at a polling place going to jail.

“The USSC has long held that if the government believes that a person’s speech will endanger public safety because of those who won’t like it, the government must supply sufficient police and/or military power to suppress the possibility of public danger and allow the speech to continue. If sufficiently dangerous conditions arise, our total military force must be applied to those who would prevent free speech to suppress them.”

That is so last year.

This Pastor is certainly an extremist. And he may be crazy. But he looks and acts a lot like another extremist and crazy man from another time in our history. A man who championed a cause that in the beginning was not supported by most people. A man who ended up at the end of a rope. But a man American troops went into battle singing his praises... Trust Lord 0bamao?

Who?

That Marxist bastyrd is irrelevant to this discussion. As “it” is irrelevant to much of anything, save “it’s” own scrawny arse.

If by “local”, you mean a few muslims meeting their moongod/73 or so virgins/Satan in the afterlife......I really don’t care.

YOU may well consider the rag a “holy book”.

That’s your choice.

It sure isn’t on par with the Torah or the Old and New Testaments.
