As one guy said a few years ago, “The police are merely secretaries with guns.”
Police are not there to protect you. They are there to clean up the mess afterward and try to find out who did it. If one wants protection, one must find ways to protect themself. Guns, wasp spray, fences, cameras, motion detectors, minefields with tripwires... Wait a sec. Better scrap that last one.
Many of these restraining orders are simply the first step in separating a man from his children; those who abuse them should be jailed & branded on the face so nobody believes them about anything again (men as well as women). This nonsense, as well as the legal structure of marriage today, are why men aren’t even bothering to do it. Not only will you probably end up maintaining an ex at a level you yourself probably can’t afford (bizarre, considering all of the advantages women are given today), but if you’re fortunate enough to have children there will be some other guy (or multiple guys, or another mommy) living with them instead of you (and you have little recourse).

Restraining orders have their place, but women shouldn’t be lulled into a false sense of security by relying on them, or their greedy lawyers, or the elitist judges; they can’t micro-manage other people’s lives.
Wise choice. With mine (unmarried to they guy but a break up nonetheless) after I was in a safe house he stalked me until he discovered where my new home was and was hanging out outside the sliding doors (which at times where slightly open to let in a bit of summer breeze.) I discovered later he was hanging out there because the cat kept meowing at the door in recognition of his presence that I was unaware of.
Bottom line. It was not until later I realized this and called the cops regarding the violation of the restraining order, but had he entered the house, I would have been dead. There is nothing quite like finding out someone has been stalking and watching you nightly within inches of where you are sitting that also continues to threaten your life. Scary stuff and being armed and ready is always a darn good idea. Good for you.

Mine broke in while I was gone. I’d always heard people say how violated that made them feel but didn’t understand until then.
When it took 45 minutes for the police to respond when he decided to sit in his car in my driveway and watch me, I knew without a doubt any protection was going to be completely up to me. I made up my mind I wasn’t going to be his (or anyone else’s) victim if I could help it.
Restraining orders are worse than worthless. My husband built a phoney case against me and got a restraining order that kept me 200 feet away from my home and my three small children, including our infant son, for 10 days, until I could get my case heard in court. Of course, the order was vacated, but he replaced it with a gag order where I was forbidden to tell my children anything about what had happened or why. During the ten days my three small children were cared for by his paramour. So in my case, a law that was supposed to protect the innocent and law abiding harmed those innocent and law abiding, my children and me, and yes, I realize that those poor souls who are physically harmed suffer more than I did.
The only TRO or PRO that actually defends the victim is a .38 cal or larger with two quick shots in center of mass.

Not to make too much light of it though. I actually understand. It seems that a lot of the time, the wrong party is the one that knows how to use the courts.
I had a friend once, who shortly after getting divorce papers from his wife, his wife got REALLY agitated one day and got downright violent. He kept his cool and she finally admited, through tears, that her attorney had told her that if she could get him to hit her, resulting in a 911 call, it would really help her in court.
Interestingly, a week before I was served papers (back in 1997) my then wife did the same thing and pushed me so hard that she fell backwards. It was weird. She got violently angry out of nowhere and for nothing. I learned she had been at the end of her process to get the papers served shortly after that and it was an attempt to do the same thing.
The problem my wife had was twofold:
1. I remembered what happened to my friend.
2. My argument style is to become Mr. Spock. The more animated the other side gets, the more “apparently” calm I get. If I DO eventually lash out it is not to hurt. It is to kill. It would be solely for self defense. It aint gonna happen with a woman unless she is threatening with some sort of weapon that could actually maim or kill.

Same here where I work. Wife had a PO on him, she calls him on his cell phone and leaves a message to call her. He’s at work, calls the wife and two hours later a cop car shows up and takes him into custody for violation ....
interesting point you make. It reminds me of a relationship seminar my husband and I recently attended in which they said according to recent research that 'stonewalling' (which men typically do and get in trouble for--by their usually more animated wife in an argument or discussion-- is found to be a self calming action. So basically many men 'stonewall' to calm themselves during a fight. This was helpful to understand as it usually annoys me when someone retreats or sits calmly while I 'animate' LOL.
But I have more empathy realizing it is not a power play or an act of disrespect. Often it is just someone trying to get calm or remain calm in a conflictual situation.

Exactly. It was not “stonewalling” in my case. BTW, I’ve been through a course called “Learning to live, learning to love” at my old church. It was teaching some VERY dangerous stuff. I told my pastor there that one of these days they were gonna get sued over it by the person that was willing to take such action.
