I agree wholeheartedly! I also speak as one whose ancestors came at various times BEFORE the founding of the nation (including those who came on the Mayflower), so, though born a yankee, I am a Southerner by choice and a Proud Native American by birth!

I concur that this is a more accurate comparison. One of my best friends is from Ipsilani, Michigan, and he has the same conservative beliefs as most of us on this blog! And yet my own daughter, bless her heart, moved to Arlington and became a died in the wool, liberal idiot! I mean, even her own sisters ask me, "What house did she grow-up in?" But, as far as conservative versus liberal, it is much more of a country versus city thought process!

Let's be honest, it was about expansion of slavery into the territories. Lincoln opposed it, the South wanted it. Lincoln was elected, the South seceded. So from their point of view it was about slavery.

Please reread the part about concentrating or killing.
Blacks were to be kept out and Indians either concentrated or killed. So who was the racist in 1860? There were many reservations created Congress. This would be understood as concentrating a population. They put limits on tribes and recognized their independence. They didn’t invite them to the dance though.

The federal government denied states this right.

It was the Constitution, specifically Article VI and the supremacy clause, that denied them this right and not the federal government.

When nullification would not work and states felt that they were no longer respected, they moved towards secession.

Twenty years later, when a perceived threat to their institution of slavery appeared.

Here in Vermont a Judge had an interesting reply to slave owners trying to use the Fugitive Slave Law to demand the return of a slave that had escaped to Vermont via the underground railroad. His reply was that the slave owner had not provided adequate proof of ownership. The slave owner wanted to know what would constitute adequate proof. The Judge's reply was that he needed "a bill of sale from God Almighty". The slave was not returned. Vermonters played a key role in the underground railroad and were proud of the fact.
