NYT: At Lincoln Memorial, a Call for Religious Rebirth (Crowd Estimate)

Are you really so sure it’s not a good time to talk about what we’re fighting for? Isn’t that where Beck is trying to take us? Faith Hope Charity? You think it is a distraction, but both Beck and I disagree with you, because we say it is the most important front in our war with communism.

And what is this “doctrine” you wish to ignore till safer times arrive? “Doctrine” simply means teaching or belief. Now, just like you, I’m not willing to slow down and argue whether baptism should be by immersion or sprinkling, or whether worship music should come from the 18th or the 21st Century.

But what about the “doctrine” that our rights don’t come from any created being, but only from our Eternal Creator? “Doctrine” like that is Kryptonite to communists. It undermines everything they’re trying to do to us. Or what about the “doctrine” that life and liberty are inalienable rights, not just transitory privileges granted by the state? Good doctrine? I am sure you think so.

So what doctrine of God, if widely believed, would best defeat the interests of communism? Or, better yet, what doctrine of God, if widely believed, would be most likely to please the God of Scripture and invite his aid and blessing, which we must have if we are to prevail in our struggle with the communists? As Solomon says:

“Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.” Psalm 127:1

All I said initially was “stop picking on the Mormons.” They are our friends and allies in this battle. If you get distracted trying to convert your allies in the middle of a war you will lose the war. Your need to proselytize is a distraction and it is insulting to our friends the Mormons who, like me, are fighting to keep our temporal world intact. Same thing with conservative Jewish people. We need them fighting with us. Not walking away because someone wants to preach to them. Now is not the time. Riddle me this, counselor... when you are trying a case, do you, in the middle of the trial, start preaching to judge and jury? I think not. Nor do I. We know better and the bar would have our heads...

Yes, when in trial mode, I play by the rules of the trial. But I never stop integrating my faith with what I’m doing, even during trial. True, I am not advocating perpetual, non-stop witnessing. That would be problematic. I *am* advocating opportunistic witnessing. God opens a window, I step through it. God closes a window, I wait for the next one to open.

Beck’s teaching of a mixture of truth and error has created several such windows, and what God opens, no human can shut. So you put me in a dilemma. If God invites me to witness, and I do not, because I am worried his political plans will somehow be derailed if I do, then I insult Him. On the other hand, if I challenge Beck, or Freemasons, or Moonies, or Baptists, or whoever, for falsehoods presented (just kidding Baptists, you’re all perfect ;), I may well insult some well-intended people, just as you say.

But it’s just not that hard a choice for me. I know who I’d rather not insult, if, no matter what I do, I will end up insulting somebody. You and I insult the socialists just for existing. I think our fellow constitutionalists and lovers of freedom who happen to belong to other faiths have bigger hearts and thicker skins than you give them credit for. So I will continue to call Beck on false teaching. I have no choice. God will not lose track of where he was in saving America.

Furthermore, if some wandering soul comes to faith through the instrumentality of telling the truth, that’s one more person that the communists will not be able to have for lunch, and that helps us all. When I came to faith, it was in part through the “insulting” work of a homeless man in L.A. Knocked me right off my path to self-destruction. How rude! Yet I will never forget him. Like Solomon says, rebuke a wise man, and he will love you for it. Give our allies in this fight some credit. If they are wise, they can only appreciate our commitment to the truth. And both of us can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Your steadfast faith is a mighty inspiration. You are correct, but I simply cannot trash the Mormons when they are brave enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with me in the trench. We are fighting the battle between good and evil as suggested in Job. Will we beat the Evil One? Unlikely. But we don't have to because “one little word will fell him...” That Word became flesh. “It is finished.” The victory was been won for us. Not by us. But, as I have nothing much better to do in this Veil of Tears until His coming, I'm going after the Communists. And... so are my comrades, the Mormons... FULL STEAM AHEAD, Captain!
