While I agree with you, your analysis goes astray, if I may ... The easy part for the socialist, communists and other “ists” is the promises. The hard part is the delivery. As you see in Europe right now, the promises cannot be kept.

I believe that any explanation of evil actions and motivation is ignoring the elephant in the room if you ignore the existence of supernatural evil. Without a literal devil pulling some strings there is no explanation for so many things that seem contradictory of the surface.
How does the feminist organization NOW find common cause with the anti woman Taleban?
How is it that every vile and perverted thing fits well under the big tent of liberalism?
The desire for power, control or money might seem the answer but a willingness to serve evil is a more encompassing explanation. Were the pograms of the 20th century brought on by a failure of the governments ability to keep their promises? While you might shoehorn that explanation in it doesn’t really seem to fit. Chairman MAO wasn’t motivated by a desire to balance his budget. Neither was Hitler.
