Is red shirt a normal term or was the NYT making light of someone getting assassinated?

Seh Daeng, was struck by a bullet in the back of the head while being interview by Thomas Fuller of The New York Times. . . described the injury as severe. 1. This looks like a political message - shooting him during an interview. 2. Brilliant observation, by mainstream media standards, that a bullet in the head is severe.

The Red Shirts are Communist trouble-makers. Now I can see why the NYTimes was interviewing him ... getting the Marxist opinion out to the world.
