>But, but the Russians will just make the pirates mad and they’ll attack more Russian ships! /s

Right, let’s see how many Russian ships get attacked after this. Russians know how to deal with this.>

I bet it was first and the last.

>Thanks, I wasn’t aware of that. I knew all members of the EU are no-death-penalty but Russia’s not part of that club.>

Technically, Russia is a member of European Counsil and has a bid to join EU. Officially EU considering it as a future member, not factually for a known reason.
Anyway, due to a bid Russian judicial system in under full EU jurisdiction. Every desicion of any Russian legal official including for example a traffic ticket from Siberian highway patrolman and or a treason verdict by jury in Moscow Court may be cancelled or ruled out by European Court in Brussels. Russians officially has a ban for a death verdicts for that reason. Anyway, Russian prisons or correction labor camps are far below any European standard. Sentenced for life there are among the most vocal opponents of death ban. Most of them prefer execution over a life in Gulag. So does African pirates for sure, facing building a railway or AF base among polar bears in a middle of nowhere at -60C.

It’s true that Russia is a member of the Council of Europe and currently has a moratorium on the death penalty (though it remains on the statute books). However it has no bid to join the EU and thus Russian laws or court verdicts cannot be challenged or affected in any way by Brussels (can you REALLY imagine the Russians standing for that???). Trials by jury were also largely abolished by Putin in 2008:

Well, we are both right and wrong. I have now checked and it was just an Italian PM invitation for Putin to join, not their own bid.
As for European Human Right Court it has power over Russian national judicial bodies due to Russian membership in a Counsil of Europe.

The European Court of Human Rights has very limited theoretical jurisdiction, and only in certain very specific areas of ‘human rights’, when it comes to members of the Council of Europe. It also has no means of enforcement and in Russia is generally ignored.

Your earlier post stated that a traffic ticket from a Siberian highway patrolman or a Russian court verdict were subject to a Europe court’s approval: not the case, and knowing Russians, I very much doubt it ever will be.

I’ve yet to meet a Siberian patrolman who gave out tickets, in any case. They all just take bribes: with either smiles or threats depending on their mood that day - don’t you just love Russia?

Well, I heard a lot of their corruption but fortunately or not it wasn’t involved in my engegements with Russian traffic cops.
First time they got me with tinted windows which is as I know now is illegal there. They took my inspection and ordered to attend a ‘comission’ a week later. ‘Comission’ was a crowd of people in a class at a police department and three officers teaching ‘pupils’ morals and ordering sanctions. As I got ‘pupils’ were accused with minor charges wasn’t worth a court trial. Most typical was a public drunkness, loud family disputes hurting neighbours’ sleeping etc. Most people were a ghetto trash there with a few drivers like me and some builders accused with hiring illegals. Officers taught me morals too, told me they could shot me as a terrorist since they can’t see who is there in a tinted car. At the end they ordered to pay about 10$ fine and to remove a tint with my own hands. I went to a bank to pay it, clerk has given me a sticker. I got back to a police department, an officer watched at me removing a tint with my poor nails, when I gave them a sticker from bank and they given my inspection back.
Next time I was caught with illegal u-turn through a double line. Officer first grabbed my license and told that ‘comission’ will suspend it for 6 months. When he saw it is canadian he has start to doubt they can they suspend it since they haven’t issued it, but he told he’ll take a license with him & order me to attend anyway to put me in jail for 15 days. I started to argue telling it is not worth jail and they are unlikely to suspend foreign license which I desperately need to keep working. At the end he given it to me back, promised to punish me if I’ll do something wrong again and driven away.
There were no any bribe demand in both cases.

The Russians didn't screw around either, they used both heavy machine guns and 30 mm cannon. The Russian press release calls it a "30mm artillery complex,".

Remember they were shooting at tanker full of crude.

This is the ship, the Marshal Shposhinikov in March of 2004 at Apra Harbor, Guam.

After shooting up the ship, their special forces rappelled onto the tanker from helios carrried by the Shaposhnikov.

She (or He as the Russians say) is a Udaloy Class Large ASW destroyer, Bol'shoy Protivolodochnyy Korabl' (BPK);

The 30 mm cannon, although it might be on a different type of ship.

There are 7 ships of the clase left in service, however one of those has been in overhaul since '90 and is unlikely to come out of it.
